The first proof of the efficacy of Christian Science that...

The first proof of the efficacy of Christian Science that came under my observation was a beautiful healing that my brother experienced; but I did not become interested until a great need forced me to do so, at a time when I was very unhappy and discouraged in my work, and weary of living. Having no physical trouble I felt certain materia medica could not help me; and I doubted very much if Christian Science could; but in my extremity I decided to give it a trial. Through the faithful help of a loving practitioner I was able to continue my work. I became interested in studying "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and, later, the Bible in connection with the Quarterly Lessons. Gradually I grew conscious of the healing that was taking place. I was happier, less irritable, less faultfinding, less selfish, more thoughtful of others, and increasingly more conscious of God and of His power to help me in my every need.

During the next few years indigestion, which had caused me periodic illness and much suffering for several years, left me; and I came to the realization that I had been entirely free, not having had a single attack since beginning the study of Christian Science. Glasses, which I had worn for nearly ten years, were laid off, though an oculist had told me I must wear them constantly or my eyes would become crossed. The cleansing process steadily continued, and God's power was given the greatest test in my experience. A serious nervous breakdown following the passing on of my mother, was healed in Science. When I took up the threads of life again after going through what seemed to me the "valley of the shadow of death," I was in possession of a "faith unmixed with doubt," stronger and more steadfast than ever before. Above all, I was convinced of the positive necessity of standing "porter at the door of thought" (Science and Health, p. 392), and refusing abiding place to erroneous suggestions which presented themselves.

These and many other blessings have filled my thought with gratitude to God for every channel through which the truth has come and is coming to "me, and mine, and all," to use the words of Mrs. Eddy (Poems, p. 4).
