Dayton, Ohio (Second Church). — April 25, 1923, at six o'clock in the morning, the corner stone of Second Church of Christ, Scientist, of Dayton, was laid. In accord with the Church Manual (Art. XVII, Sect. 3) there was "no large gathering of people nor display." This is the most important event in the history of Second Church of Christ, Scientist. It means far more than merely placing a stone in the walls of our church. This edifice stands as one of the outward symbols of the permanent establishment of Christian Science in this city and community. This church is a loyal branch of The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Massachusetts; therefore it "is designed to be built upon the Rock, Christ" (Manual, p. 19). Its mission, like that of all loyal Christian Science churches, is to aid in "healing and saving the world from sin and death; thus to reflect in some degree the Church Universal and Triumphant" (ibid.). The copper box placed in the corner stone contains a copy of the Bible, all the works of Mary Baker Eddy, her life history by Siby1 Wilbur, the Church Hymnal, a copy of "The Mother Church" by Joseph Armstrong, copies of current issues of our periodicals, a copy of our church by-laws, and of the references read upon this occasion. We trust that every member of this church will daily strive to demonstrate the real significance of Church as given in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 583); and we desire to express our gratitude for what the members and friends have already contributed. Joy fills our hearts as each week sees the work on the church edifice progressing.
