When I first became interested in Christian Science, it...
When I first became interested in Christian Science, it was for the purpose of having a healing. I had been under medical treatment for two years, having had five of the best physicians. Each one diagnosed my difficulty as being a very bad case of nervous prostration; and I was put to bed for a rest cure, under the care of a trained nurse, who was to watch my diet; for this trouble had so affected my stomach that I was able to eat very little without experiencing the greatest distress. In fact, at last it became so bad that I had a fear of eating. I was also taken to a hospital to have an X-ray photograph taken of my stomach. The previously mentioned symptoms, instead of improving, were getting worse. One morning, after having passed through all these experiences, I was lying in bed as miserable, to sense, as one could be, wondering what next I should try, when suddenly it seemed as if I heard a voice saying, Why don't you try Christian Science?
Christian Science was a new religion to me. I had heard of it, but had not been interested in it sufficiently to inquire into its teachings. The following morning, when the attending physician called, I asked him if he believed in Christian Science. He answered by saying: "Yes, I do somewhat; suppose you try it, and let me hear how you are getting along. I have given you the very best medical treatment I can prescribe. To be truthful, there is no medicine for nerves, and the less you take the better." After the physician left, I sent for a Christian Science practitioner, who came at once and began treating me, but it seemed as if I could not grasp what Christian Science taught. I continued with the treatment for several months, without improving. I then concluded to go to Philadelphia and have a practitioner there give me treatments, which I did. After ten days I returned home very much discouraged, and remarked that I would go back to material remedies again. This time I called in a homeopathic doctor. The little understanding I had gained of Christian Science was enough for me to realize, however, that I was having more faith in drugs than in Truth; each time I would take any of the medicine, I had a fear that it would cause me to feel worse. I therefore dismissed the doctor, and threw all medicine out. The same day I sent for a Christian Science practitioner again, and began treatment.
I had a beautiful healing; and ever since have been able to eat all kinds of food without any disturbance whatsoever. This healing took place two years ago, and I have not taken any medicine since then. Every illness that has appeared has been beautifully overcome through Christian Science treatment.
