Signs of the Times

[Grit, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia]

We have to thank America for many things. Among them, and not the least of them, is The Christian Science Monitor. I have nothing to say about the religious tenets of this remarkable body of people, but of their daily paper I have much to say. It has proved that a great daily can be run without police court news or questionable advertisements. It is a magnificent newspaper, but it has resolutely refused to imitate all the world's daily papers and have "a chamber of horrors" column, a sport page which flatly contradicts the ethics of its leading articles, or lying advertisements which enter thousands of homes in the respectable garb of daily news and do untold harm. This paper in its size, "get up," illustrations, news, and special articles ranks with the best papers the world has yet produced. [The Press, Memphis, Tenn.]

The fundamentals of Jesus' program are that all men are brothers and should live together on a basis of mutual service and equality of material supply; that Mammon, "the god of riches," is the chief enemy of God and His kingdom and must, therefore, be overthrown if the kingdom of God is to come, and that true worship consists, not in ceremonies and creeds, but in bringing all the doings of humanity into obedience to the law of love, thus enabling humanity to develop into the highest type of spiritual beings.
