My attention was favorably turned to Christian Science...
My attention was favorably turned to Christian Science by overhearing a conversation between a physician and a patient, although several years elapsed before I met a Christian Scientist or came into possession of any of the Christian Science literature.
Finally I was led to order a copy of the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy. When it arrived I was attending a woman extremely ill with typhoid fever and frequent hemorrhages. The physician gave no hope of recovery and the patient was at the time unconscious. I began reading the book aloud in the presence of the patient, desisting only when other duties and the calls of the physician interfered. Without thought of the passage of time, I read for many hours and late at night, after making the patient as comfortable as possible. I slept soundly and upon awakening found my patient conscious and her temperature normal. Although unable at first to credit the evidence of this wonderful change, it gradually dawned upon me that when I ceased to look for death I found life, the patient's recovery being the result of this first effort to know Christian Science. A year passed before the way opened for me to abandon my work under materia medica, and thereafter it required many weeks and months to emerge into the more effective mode of thought and work of nursing in Christian Science. During this trying period I read the textbook no less than five times, finding increased joy and strength in so doing.
I felt as most young students do that I should make the financial demonstration at once and then be free to go on and make others. This, however, was not accomplished for some time; but I have been glad, indeed, for the daily growth required, as I was called upon to realize that "day by day the manna fell," and to know that we demonstrate our supply for each day as we look away from the material sources and look to God alone for all our needs. I have had all my needs supplied, never lacking when I kept close to Principle.
