[Written for the Sentinel]

God's Love to You

The song of the lark,
The stars in the dark
That shine through the midnight blue;
The mountain whose peak
Invites you to seek
A clearer, more far-reaching view;
Each flower that blows,
The heartsease, the rose,—
What are these but God's love to you?

The thoughts that uplift,
That winnow and sift
The fading and false from the true;
Ideas that unfold
Their hearts of pure gold,
Like lilies that shelter the dew;
And songs in the night,
Soft, star-points of light,—
What are these but God's love to you?
