It is reported in the Bible that the most successful physician who ever ministered to the needs of humanity refused to accept a challenge which was intended to prove his divine sonship, but this attitude did not hinder him from healing all manner of diseases among the people who came in faith beseeching him to help them. Likewise are Christian Scientists modestly doing a vast amount of healing work, and it is possible to produce authentic proofs of the healing of the disease which has been diagnosed by physicians as cancer. Furthermore the healing of diseases, including cancer, has been accomplished by recognizing the mental nature of disease.

Good precedent in this respect is furnished by Christ Jesus; also such a theory of disease is advocated by at least some physicians. It is self-evident that without consciousness or mentality there is no existence. Consequently the character of consciousness determines the character of existence. The difference between a diseased person and a well person is that the former appears to be conscious of pain or discord of some kind, while the latter is conscious of peace and harmony. Christian Scientists do not ignore the obligation placed on them as true Christians, even though they are not professing perfection in their demonstrations thus far. There is much good which can be done through a scientific understanding of God, and which is about as essential at this time as feeding the multitudes in the manner Christ Jesus did, or walking on the water. The apostle to the Philippians, who is known to have done many mighty works, expressed the position of Christian Scientists, in speaking of the resurrection of the dead: "Not as though I had already attained, either were already perfect: ... Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus."
