The Wisdom of the Wise

Words of wisdom are like water in the desert. The wisdom which Christian Science brings never fails, it is a perennial spring watering thirsty hearts and minds with the refreshment of Spirit. This wisdom not only supplies the understanding wherewith men are healed physically, but also the light which solves the problems of the home and of business, resolving the perplexities of daily life into their component nonentities. This wisdom forbids any unwise reliance upon material means for curing disease as well as sin, and looks to divine Love to settle effectually the affairs of the world. After the seventy whom Jesus sent forth to preach and to heal had told him that even the devils were subject unto them through his name, it is recorded: "In that hour Jesus rejoiced in spirit, and said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babies: even so, Father; for so it seemed good in thy sight." Commenting on this Mrs. Eddy writes in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 131): "As aforetime, the spirit of the Christ, which taketh away the ceremonies and doctrines of men, is not accepted until the hearts of men are made ready for it."

The wisdom of the wise consists in obeying God; the foolishness of the world consists in following its own inventions and calling this following wisdom. It is unwise to be influenced by human will or to try to influence others by that will. Whenever the experiment is made it leads to ultimate disaster, until the needed lesson has been learned and God's will becomes supreme in the affections and thoughts. The wise man is he who minds his own business by making that business his Father's business. Every one has an opportunity to be like the wise men who came from afar seeking Truth, and when they found it not only made it their own quickly but also offered their gifts in return by laying down their modes of thinking at the feet of Christ. If modern wise men be truly wise they will not let Herod know their thoughts nor guide them in their movements, but will go their way, letting Truth abide where it will and unfold into the works of God.

The writer of Proverbs gave this admonition: "My son, hear the instruction of thy father, and forsake not the law of thy mother." Divine Science, using the words father and mother in an absolute sense, applies these terms to God. The instruction of this Father and the law of this Mother constitute complete wisdom. The wise according to Christian Science love their Mother equally with their Father, for love is the law of the mother, which must not be forsaken. This law may seem frail to the one who believes in physical or intellectual power, but it is the representative on earth of the power which is in heaven. It reflects the irresistible, omnipotent, divine will which nullifies human influence and sets men free, exhibiting the kind of wisdom Solomon asked for. How wise is the love even of the human mother when it is obedient to God in the protection of the young and helpless! Mother nature, herself unhampered by human fears, makes wonderful provision for her children; how much more should the scientific Christian expect perfect wisdom at the hands of the Mother who is God!
