It is with deep gratitude for the understanding of God and man which Christian Science has brought me that I give my testimony. I knew nothing about this religion when, some five or six years ago, a dear friend wrote and told us of his healing and sent me a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, earnestly requesting me to read it. At that time I was suffering from several diseases, also the after-effects of a major operation which I had undergone the previous year; I was under a strict diet, having to take three kinds of medicine daily and never being able to eat even the plainest food without intense suffering afterward.

I opened the book very unwillingly, determining to read it only as an expression of thanks for my friend's kindness, for I feared that Christian Science was some religious fad. To my great surprise what I read appealed to me at once. I could not understand everything, but what I did understand filled me with joy, so I kept on reading every spare minute I could find. I began at the beginning, reading only a few lines at a time and trying to understand what I read. When I reached the end of that wonderful first chapter, on Prayer, and read our dear Leader's interpretation of the Lord's Prayer, a great light illumined my consciousness and my heart was filled with praise and thankfulness to God, and with joy and peace unspeakable. It threw away all my medicine at once and have not touched a drop since, but have eaten whatever I liked with impunity.

I had gained the top of the mount, but did not know how to hold it. Later, when circumstances arose which roused my doubts and fears, I found myself again in the valley. Since then I have been working my way upward step by step with many a stumble in between, learning every sort. Some-times I seem to progress very slowly indeed, but I just keep pressing on, feeling thankful for every little step gained. I am now able, sometimes with the aid of a practitioner, sometimes by just reading our textbook, to overcome every erroneous condition that comes up. My great wish is to be able some day to help others.
