It is heartfelt gratitude that prompts me to write this...

It is heartfelt gratitude that prompts me to write this testimony and thereby let the world know of my wonderful healing in the base hospital of this cantonment. The diagnosis on my army hospital "brief" reads "double pneumonia," and chronologically shows admission to hospital acutely ill on June 4; on June 6, telegram to parents to be present on account of possible death; June 9, condition of temperature and pulse very close to normal; and on June 14, on foot walking about hospital ward. I was delivered from all suffering and fever and other evidences of disease inside of five days, even though Christian Science treatment was not started until two days after admission to the hospital, through delay in transmission of my message. The medical officers, knowing of other instances of help received under Christian Science treatment (there was a similar case in the same ward under treatment at the same time) could not help but notice the rapid progress, and seemed well satisfied. There was no opposition manifested, which to me is but another proof of the efficacy of Love to overcome all obstacles. I am deeply grateful for this healing, because I can see instances of similar disease requiring confinement and medical treatment for a period of thirty to sixty days, often developing more serious infection.

I am most thankful to God for this wonderful healing truth, for His care and protection, for the pure spirituality of our beloved Leader, Mrs. Eddy, who has made the light to shine in the darkness, and also for the sincere efforts of the practitioner and his high sense of patriotism. I am also deeply grateful for the activity of the Camp Welfare worker here, who made it possible for me to have my literature each day. This channel provides opportunity for much good work, to my observation, as the truth is spread thus when the boys are apparently nearest the point of receptivity. I have seen its work result in scattering the mists of fear and worry through the wise distribution of literature and the vest pocket editions of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy. I am thankful to see the pure, spiritual messages of the Monitor carried each day into all the wards and to see it read, for thereby the soil is tilled. I have but one aim in life, now as a soldier of liberty and later, when freedom is triumphant, as a private citizen, and that is to live each day in a higher radiance of Love, Life, and Truth.

This healing has awakened me, and also members of my family, to a higher sense of gratitude, and it is a great comfort to all of us to know that always "underneath are the everlasting arms," ever present and ever ready to deliver us from sin, disease, and death. I have at this writing been in the Army only a month, but can see the far-reaching effect of a wider spread of the truth among the boys, and for this reason I hope my testimony will aid many to take heart and "press toward the mark."—Private William J. Bickel, Camp Zachary Taylor, Louisville, Ky.
