It is with deep gratitude, in the hope of affording help to other lonely, storm tossed pilgrims on life's highway, that the following testimony to the healing power of Christian Science is given. About six years ago I was in that condition, physical, mental, and moral, described in the words of Paul as "having no hope, and without God in the world." I suffered from great physical weakness and a feeling of utter incapacity to meet life's burdens and duties, which it seemed hopeless to struggle against. Normal strength had never been known from infancy and the weakness became accentuated as childhood passed into youth and youth into manhood, owing to a succession of illnesses. For years life was a continuous struggle against all kinds of constantly recurring ailments, including severe headaches lasting for days at a time, stomach disorder, liver derangements, chills, coughs, colds, influenza, rheumatism, lumbago, toothache, neuralgia, and faintness, together with what is known as loss of nerve.
During this time many books were read in the search for a satisfactory solution of the problem of existence, a search which was never given up, and a problem which seemed persistently to declare itself insolvable. Most of the best books bearing on this problem were read, but the riddle of the universe remained. At last I found myself helpless and hopeless, alone, and threatened with complete destitution. I went to my private room to pray. No words came to the lips, but gradually a sense of the ever presence of God stole into consciousness, bringing with it the calm certainty that the truth about God and man must be revealed, and that this revelation must necessarily insure the supply of all human needs. As an immediate result of this a long journey was undertaken, greatly against personal inclination, to a city in another country, where was found supply for all material needs and where the question, "What is truth?" was answered by an introduction to the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy. The study of this book healed me instantaneously of a very painful and distressing complaint which seemed the climax of all previous suffering and was threatening to incapacitate me entirely for any useful activity, and for which an operation had been recommended by a celebrated hygienist. This discordant condition has never recurred.
Since that healing, Christian Science has been the only and the infallible remedy for every attack of illness. Some forms of physical discord have entirely disappeared; while others are more gradually being overcome; but whereas six years ago one foot was in the grave, so to speak, and each day's work was accomplished in physical and mental agony, to-day health and strength are being increasingly realized and life has become full of usefulness and joy, the greatest joy of all being the knowledge that salvation from all forms of discord is available for, and free to, all mankind,—the salvation revealed in the Scriptures when these are interpreted correctly, according to their spiritual import, as they are in Christian Science.—J. Will Carr, Glasgow, Scotland.
