When a young girl I became a member of an orthodox...
When a young girl I became a member of an orthodox church, although the teachings were not my ideals. Having a great desire to do good, I later took up the work of teaching school, thinking I might find more opportunity in that way. I felt that the only obedience was obtained through love, and depended on God to guide me in all I did. Afterward, my home life having changed, hoping to be of further usefulness to mankind I entered a hospital to become a nurse. After graduating from the training school for nurses, I accepted the position of chief night nurse, and during the hospital work found many puzzling experiences, and many times asked myself the question, Why? My questions were never answered until I began the study of Christian Science.
During my last year in the hospital I had a severe attack of kidney trouble, and for the next six years was frequently confined to bed with abscess and hemorrhage of the kidneys. The attacks became more severe and my general physical condition more weakened. I was under the care of some of the best physicians in this city during that time, and after careful examinations was given no encouragement that I would ever be any better. In May, 1908, I was asked to try Christian Science. I had always trusted God, as far as I understood Him, for everything else, so reasoned that since others said they were healed, why should I not investigate and see for myself. I began the study and went to a practitioner, with the result that in just four weeks the condition was eliminated and I have never had a return of the trouble. My strength gradually returned and I have now, and have had for some time, better health than ever before.
Ptomaine poisoning, blood poisoning, carbuncles, pleurisy, and other discordant physical conditions have been quickly overcome in our home through the study and application of Christian Science, for which I am deeply grateful; but the understanding of God, whom I had always ignorantly worshiped, is cause for much deeper gratitude than are the physical healings which, I know, are the "signs following." My greatest desire is so to live and reflect the love taught in Christian Science as to prove my gratitude in the only right way.—Mrs. Caroline J. Hamilton, Columbus, Ohio.
