Progress

On page 1 of "The People's Idea of God," Mrs. Eddy has written, "Every step of progress is a step more spiritual." Since the discovery of Christian Science by Mrs. Eddy in 1866, true progress has been brought to the whole world and spiritual unfoldment continues to denote the progress has accompanies the fulfilling of God's law. At the dedication of the extension of The Mother Church in 1906, a clarion call for higher action was sounded when Mrs. Eddy gave the message, "Choose ye" (Miscellany, p. 3). This declaration of spiritual power "called the earth from the rising of the sun unto the going down thereof," presenting to human consciousness the government of divine Principle and the right of the individual to this righteous government. This summons now sounds clearer to ears that hear its true import, and gratitude fills the heart that comprehends the wonderful foresight and wisdom which gave the call to men and nations.

Marching on at the command of Truth, the loyal follower has made his choice between Spirit and matter. This has awakened his thought to the spiritual facts of being, and acquainted him with God's universe, including man, which Christian Science reveals. He therefore has a message of salvation and good cheer to give to the troubled earth at this period of its great conflict. To his thought the distinction made by Christian Science between the activity of divine Mind and the erroneous methods of materiality is clear, and Jesus' words of progress and victory enlighten his path. "Be of good cheer; I have overcome the world."

Faithfulness to this task of choosing between Spirit and matter develops the ability to maintain the purity of Truth and to detect and reject the deceitful human counterfeit. How sweetly spiritual blessings unfold as the reward of constant alterness to the demands of divine Principle and unhesitating obedience thereto. Indifference, indolence, and apathy do not becloud the wakeful thought which is firm and constant in knowing that divine Mind holds and governs every decison which forwards the right adjustment of the affairs of nations as well as of men. When the lesson is learned which our Father teaches and the student is ready for the next "step more spiritual," a clearer vision of the truth of being is earned and thoughts are "alive unto God." Former conditions of belief, human pride, vainglory, self-seeking, are shattered to the ground, seen as nothingness. Meekness, ability and readiness to meet the needs of the hour, and obedience to the law of spiritual activity become the purpose of daily endeavor.
