In 1905 I took up the study of Christian Science, not because of any apparent disability, but because of what I saw among several friends and relatives who were very dear to me. I had many times asked what it was, but had received no satisfactory answer, as those asked were not themselves students. Before long I possessed for myself Mrs. Eddy's book "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," and after reading as far as page 14, I had what was to me a most wonderful revelation.

At two o'clock one morning in December, 1909, an alarm was given that the next house was on fire. Directly I was awake to its meaning, I was also fully awake to what Christian Science was to mean to me as a practical help, and while dressing turned to God to know Him as our refuge and strength, and quite calmly moved about to the next best thing to do. For several nights afterwards I had a great battle with the belief of fear; but four visitors who were expected came and were a wonderful help, being students of Christian Science.

The following year we took a house in a neighboring place at the seashore, in beautiful surroundings. The house itself had been an old school and the garden merely an asphalt court. To make it fit for habitation, therefore, seemed a heavy undertaking, especially as my mother and father were not at all in sympathy with Christian Science and were over seventy-five years old; but I had a great deal of loving help from Christian Science friends, as well as others. Love is everywhere and I realized more and more the truth expressed in the words of a hymn:—
