Twelve years ago, while attending for the first time a Christian Science service, I was healed of depression and discouragement. During a two years' course at a state normal school I had found myself suffering from almost constant headache, which seemed to destroy my ability to concentrate thought on the given work. The headache was accompanied by backache, bowel disorder, occasional attacks of rheumatism, and a few minor ailments. The doctors considered that the root of the trouble lay in imperfect eyesight. A specialist advised spectacles to be worn constantly for the remainder of my life, on account of a serious structural defect and another incurable condition. His treatment was followed carefully for a year, and at the same time I was obediently following the directions of our family physician. Then as I was no better my father was referred to a nose specialist, who announced the necessity of removing a bone pressing on the optic nerve. This slight operation was followed by a period of greater depression, for no improvement physically had taken place in any way during the entire year's treatment.
Then came the first glimpse of Christian Science. During that first service my "spirit of heaviness" was replaced by the "garment of praise." That evening treatment was begun, and it was continued for six weeks, during which time purchased a copy of our text-book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy. The consciousness of the presence of Love which came to me during the treatments was wonderful, and the truth voiced by the practitioner filled my hungry heart. The spectacles were removed and have never been needed since. My health began to improve at once, and with continued application of the truth to everyday problems I became perfectly well and strong. My work, which had been neglected during the year of darkness, was resumed and continued for four years, when I resigned in order to do more active work for our cause.
I thank God for His "wonderful works to the children of men." Our Leader through her constant self-abnegation presented the Science of Christianity to us in its purity. My prayers is that I may grow "unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ."
