I wish to express my gratitude for the help I have received...

I wish to express my gratitude for the help I have received through Christian Science during the past twenty-four years. For six years I was a physical wreck and never free from pain. I suffered from kidney trouble and a complication of ailments, but the most severe pain was in my back. I spent one winter in a hospital. Later I gained a little, but there came a relapse, and I was able to do only the very lightest of work, while even that required every effort I was able to put forth. I took medicine and was under the care of doctors continually, but nothing had any lasting effect.

As the years went on I because unable to eat without suffering extreme pain afterward, and all my organs were said to be affected. Finally I felt I must give up the fight, for I had lost faith in every kind of doctor and was rapidly growing worse. I was then living in Nova Scotia, but a brother in the West asked me to come to his home, as he thought the climate might agree with me, and with new hope I accepted his invitation. Before a month had passed, however, I was worse than ever, for the cold air seemed to affect my lungs and a walk of six blocks left me exhausted. At this time I heard by letter of a lady who had been healed of lung trouble through Christian Science after the doctors had given her up. I had never heard of this religion, but after listening to the reading of that letter, the thought that I must try Christian Science never left me, although I was still under a doctor's care, and I finally determined to give it a trial as my last chance.

I obtained the address of a practitioner in Minneapolis, and without reading the Christian Science literature or talking with any one on the subject, I sought help. Up to the fourth treatment there was not the slightest change in my condition. The following night I retired early, as usual, and woke up about daylight with the most wonderful feeling of strength and happiness. I moved to one side very carefully, as formerly any movement had always brought pain; but this time there was not a twinge. I was startled, and made a quick jerk to see what would happen,—but still no pain. Then I jumped out of bed and went through a series of contortions of all sorts to find out if this sudden freedom from pain could be real. As it finally dawned on me that I was healed, and whole, the wave of gratitude and happiness that flooded my being was beyond the power of words to express. This happiness has continued with me ever since. It does not seem to depend on my physical well-being, but is something apart from that; it has strengthened me in every way, and enabled me to overcome difficulties of all sorts.
