Oases

Being a traveling salesman, my duties bring me constantly in contact with people of almost every kind and condition, and with almost every phase of mortal experience. "Drummers" are generally said to be "hail fellow well met" with all men; and while in the past they have not always enjoyed the most complimentary reputation, I am happy to be able to say that a wonderful change is taking place in this field of employment. Christian Science is largely responsible for this change, for it is rapidly invading the ranks of these knights of the road, and making them a better, happier, healthier, and more successful lot of men.

Perhaps few people realize to what extent traveling salesmen are tried and tempted. They must patiently listen to their customers' "tales of woe," of bad business, of sickness in the family, and of many other discordant things. In the evening at the hotel the general topic of conversation is the worship of the golden calf. Indeed, these men might often "fall from grace" if they had not learned in Christian Science that all discordant conditions are the offspring of mortal or carnal mind, the result of wrong thinking.

In order to keep our own thought clear, and thereby bless those with whom we come in contact, we must constantly turn to the means of grace provided by the wisdom and forethought of our beloved Leader. One of these is the Christian Science reading-room, an oasis in the desert of material thought and turmoil. Here the weary wanderer may drink of the "water of life" and be refreshed. Here is the "atmosphere of Spirit" (Science and Health, p. 590); here is harmony; here is, indeed, a mount of transfiguration, an isle of safety.
