A recent sermon against Christian Science in the tabernacle...
Daily News
A recent sermon against Christian Science in the tabernacle was most convincing to many. In the main, the things the doctor opposed and denounced are not found in the teachings of Christian Science by those who have given this matter the highest and only true test. All intelligent Christian Scientists condemn and denounce idolatry, "damnable heresies," adding to the Bible, substituting any other book for the Bible, proselyting, lying, falsehoods, denying the coming of the Christ in the flesh, denying his divinity or personality, or making merchandise of the gospel.
The doctor said that Christian Science taught and practised these evils. He thus set up these men of straw and was cheered when he knocked them down. Had the people who cheered known, as do all Christian Scientists through study and demonstration, that he did not oppose Christian Science, but only what he thought it was, they would not have been so ready to applaud. The doctor said Mrs. Eddy declared Christian Science was unchangeable, but that she proved this to be false by revising her book. So it might be said that learned men who have written text-books on mathematics and declared the science unchangeable, have contradicted themselves by revising their books.
For the very best of reasons, all Christian Scientists value "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" as the best book in the world except the Bible. This book is not their Bible, but the Bible is the soul, life, and foundation of their text-book. To choose between the Bible and this book is foolishness, is worse than choosing between a house and its foundation, for this book without the Bible would be a poor thing indeed. It is not adding to the Bible, but, as the doctor's sermons should do, it makes the Bible better understood. Because Mrs. Eddy said that God was not a person in common with men and women, but an infinite personality, the doctor concludes that "Christian Scientists worship a God without intelligence," and because she said God is Principle, without the shadow of turning, and being good, all His creations must reflect good, therefore in his opinion Christian Scientists are Hottentots and heathens worshiping blind laws. The doctor settled the fact that God was a person by quoting Scripture showing that God had hands, arms, ears, eyes. Had he quoted the fourth verse of the ninety-first psalm, he might have proven that God had feathers and wings.
