I am one who can truly say I have come out of great tribulation
I am one who can truly say I have come out of great tribulation. I have proven many times in the past ten years that "God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble." I never knew what it was to feel well, strong, and happy, until Christian Science taught me how to know God as Life, Truth, and Love.
In 1901, after trying many physicians and having everything done for me that a kind husband could do, I was taken to a hospital in Chicago and operated on. I was on the operating-table seven times and made four trips to the hospital. A trained nurse accompanied me home, and I still continued with different physicians, taking electrical treatments, etc., for six months. I was a wreck, and did not care to look in the faces of even my loved ones. I prayed to die, for after having paid out large sums of money for physicians, surgeons, and nurses, I suffered more than ever. The minister of the church of which I was at that time a member, offered many an earnest prayer for me.
One day a relative who was a minister called to see me, and during the conversation spoke of having visited a relative in New York who had been an invalid for years but had been healed through Christian Science. I immediately thought, Why cannot God heal me? This was the first case of healing in Christian Science of which I had heard, and I longed to know more about it. God surely knew my desire, for in a short time a neighbor who was not a Christian Scientist at that time, gave me a Sentinel. I eagerly read every word, and returned it with the remark that there was something there for me. A little later she gave me a Journal, from which I selected the name of a practitioner of whom I had never heard, and I wrote asking her for help. In a few days I went forty miles to see her, and stayed overnight. My healing came slowly, as it seemed to take me a long time to understand God as we are taught in Christian Science, but it has been permanent. The patience this faithful practitioner manifested will never be forgotten.
