Christian Science was first brought to my notice by a...
Christian Science was first brought to my notice by a friend who had left our chapel and Sunday school for the study of this teaching, and being concerned about his leaving the truth, as I then thought, I decided to study the subject myself in order to show him where he was wrong. At the same time I told him that if I found it to be the truth, I wanted it, and would follow it at any cost. This friend did his work with me so well, answering my questions in so reasonable a manner, that all my former prejudice was soon broken down, for nothing inconsistent would appeal to me, as I was of a reasoning turn of mind and would accept nothing but what was consistently Scriptural. I at first began the study in the same spirit with which St. Paul went to Damascus, to persecute what I then thought was false teaching; but having come to a standstill in the doctrines taught me from childhood, and wishing to advance in the spiritual understanding of the Scriptures, I was ready to see the truth from whatever source presented.
While reading the text-book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," it appealed to me at every page, and I then wanted to prove it, although I had not up to that time believed in its healing efficacy. As I had been suffering from a very painful condition of my foot for about ten years, I prayed that God would guide me in the way of truth, and reveal Himself to me as He did to Gideon; and I mentally added that if my foot was healed in answer to this prayer, I should know that it was accomplished by the understanding of the Christian Science teaching which I was then assimilating. In ten days my foot was permanently healed.
I was then called upon to leave all—home, friends, church-membership—and start life afresh, to follow in this line of light. During the next eighteen months I was healed of anemia, sleeplessness, and chronic biliousness, each of lifelong standing, and since taking my stand for Christian Science, fifteen years ago, my health and strength have become more and more established, and this truth has been applied to every detail of my daily life. I also had a deformity, produced in childhood, but during the last seven years, while working in a new field, my limbs have become straighter, so that an inch and a half is added to my stature.
