Among the Churches

Current Notes

Roxbury, Mass.—The corner-stone of First Church of Christ, Scientist, Roxbury, was laid Saturday morning, Jan. 16, at half past seven. There were present the officers of the church, a member of the firm of architects, and a representative of the builders. The building is to be of fireproof construction, the exterior of brick, soft gray in tone, crowned with dome and cresting. The auditorium, seating one thousand people, is to have a sloping floor, without galleries or obstructions of any kind, and will be lighted from three sides and from a central light in the dome. The main entrance will be from Elm Hill avenue. The Sunday school is to be in the basement, Howland street level. On the whole, the building will be simple, yet dignified and strong, truly typifying the cause for which it stands. It will be completed about Dec. 1, 1915.—Correspondence.

Montana.—The Christian Science churches and societies of Montana maintained a booth for the distribution of authorized Christian Science literature at the Montana state fair, held in Helena, Mont., Sept. 21–26 inclusive. There were distributed 558 pamphlets, 137 Sentinels, 53 Journals, 28 Editorial Comments, 27 Herolds, and 1,005 Monitors. About five hundred of these Monitors were distributed by newsboys in the business section of Helena. The issue of Sept. 19 contained an article on the Montana state fair. The Monitors which were left over from this distribution work were sent to the state penitentiary at Deer Lodge, to be distributed among the prisoners.—Correspondence.

Newburyport, Mass.—After a delay of nearly a month, occasioned by the filing of the deed and other legal business at Salem, the document conveying the old Whitefield church building to First Church of Christ, Scientist, of this city, has been passed. Various alterations will be made.
