A few years ago, when I came to Christian Science because of a deep bereavement, I received great help in this direction, so much so that I reached out for more good.
Up to this time I had been a heavy smoker from a boy. I decided that the habit was bad for me, and by exercising considerable will-power, stopped it abruptly, and did not, with one exception, smoke for about nine months. At the end of that period I experienced financial reverses. Discouragement crept in, and the tobacco habit returned even worse than it was before, to the extent that I was smoking forty to fifty times a day. In a few months the financial troubles righted themselves, and as things took on a brighter hue, a loving practitioner pointed out to me the need of clearing my garden from weeds, for if not uprooted, they might grow up and choke the truth that was implanted in one's consciousness. Knowing what she meant, I told her that I would be most grateful to be healed of the desire for tobacco, but that I could not give it up and still have the desire, because it would cause me more suffering than I was willing to endure. At her request, I went to her home one Sunday afternoon, and after talking the matter over, she gave me a treatment. I have never used tobacco since—I have had no desire to do so. It was an instantaneous healing, an absolute proof of the power of Christian Science.
Although the healing of physical ills and false appetites is both pleasant and profitable, it is not to be compared with the spiritual uplift, the joy of knowing that "God is infinite, all-power, all Life, Truth, Love, over all, and All" (Science and Health, p. 17). Surely, no one can have more cause to be grateful to God for Christian Science than have I and mine. Although my understanding may be slight, I at least know that I am headed in the right direction, and I shall make every effort to evidence how truly I am grateful by trying to keep the ten commandments and live the golden rule.
