The Lectures
Bliss Knapp gave a very interesting lecture on Christian Science, under the auspices of The Mother Church of Boston, in the Beacon Universalist church. He was introduced by Dr. George L. Perin, who said in part:—
We have very old and very respectable authority for the declaration that a tree should be judged by its fruit. Accepting that ancient standard of judgment, I should be inclined to give Christian Science very high rank. This teaching has made a tremendous contribution to the sum total of human happiness in the practical annihilation in some millions of human souls of three very pesky devils,—fear, anger, and worry,—and a numerous brood of physical and mental ills that are the natural offspring of these three devils.
I do not know how some of you may feel about it, but I am willing to take off my hat to a church that can make a poor man feel rich, that can make a sick man feel well, that can make a dying man start a new business, that can make a man smile even when he fights, that can make a man who was afraid of his shadow lie down at night and sleep in sweet serenity, that can turn the acid of worry into the exhilarating tonic of trust; in short, that can take the stoop out of a man's shoulders, clarify his complexion, postpone old age, and make him walk erect, as if he really believed he was God's child living in God's world.
