It is about eighteen years since I first took up the study of Christian Science for healing,—surely long enough for me to have absorbed all the excellent articles and testimonies given in our periodicals without expressing my gratitude for them. Some of these statements of truth have been especially helpful in tiding me over the dark places in my experience, places so dark that it has never yet seemed well for me to rehearse them. Suffice it to say that I feel convinced that this truth, taught and practised by Jesus and now being presented through Mrs. Eddy's teaching and practice, will heal every human woe.
At the time I took up Christian Science I was suffering from numerous effects of a siege of illness and feeling the certain approach of an incurable disease, supposed to be hereditary in the family, which I knew that no material remedies would prevent. I wrote to a friend at Newton, Iowa, who had been healed through Christian Science treatment, and asked her what real Christian Science was. She immediately replied by sending me a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, with some of the most simple statements of Truth in it marked. The first idea I gained from reading the book was that it was not God's intention that I should be sick, so I read a few minutes and did housework a few minutes, worked a while and read a while, till I could work all day. The days have been very few that I have not read some, though not always understandingly.
I obtained a copy of Science and Health for myself just as soon as I could get one from Boston, as I knew of no place nearer where I could send for one. I did not see my way at first to have the Journal unless I subscribed for six months only. This I did, feeling sure that when the time was up I would be ready to renew. I was ready, and have never since lacked for any of the good things which The Christian Science Publishing Society sends out.
