[Written for the Sentinel]

Love's Way

Speak kindly. Each reforming word
That flows with love's smooth stream,
Lightens the burdened sense of thought,
Aiding the heart with sorrow fraught
To break its dream.

Think guardedly, for tongue ne'er tells
Nor knows the power of thought.
Each selfish wish or bitter tear
Or angry glance or hidden fear
Is dearly bought.

Walk fearlessly, for Jesus trod
The selfsame road of pain.
His wounded feet the way have shown,
And o'er the thorns the rose has grown
That knows no stain.

Pray simply. Every pure desire,
Bereft of fashioned phrase,
Has access to the ear divine,
Where, blessed in deeds, true motives shine—
Love's perfect praise.
