This testimony is written with a sense of deep gratitude...
This testimony is written with a sense of deep gratitude and love for the many blessings which have come to me and my family through Christian Science.
For over seven years I was afflicted with a diseased condition of the leg, which in the opinion of many physicians was due to calcification of the blood. We left nothing untried. I was refused admission to a hospital where I had sought help as a last resort, since my case was said to be hopeless. To this serious trouble was added a severe attack of influenza and of pleurisy. I was needed in our business, and therefore could not have the necessary rest in bed. When I consulted the physician again, he informed me that since I had neglected to follow his advice formerly, he was not able to cope with the case, and that my recovery from this severe illness was impossible. All he could do for me would be to administer hypodermics as a means of assuagement. To this I would not consent, as I had gone through three severe operations within a few years and had a keen recollection of the suffering caused by these injections. I therefore refused pointblank the services of the physician, and none of his prognostications came true.
It was then that I received at my bedside the visit of a dear friend and adherent of Christian Science. Among some smaller publications he gave me a copy of the Herold and pointed out to me the way of Christian Science. Although I knew nothing of its teachings, I had no difficulty in grasping them, and after a week's reading of the literature handed me, I undertook, though with great difficulty, a trip to Braunschweigh in the company of a friend, herself an ardent Christian Scientist, in order to attend a Wednesday evening meeting. That same evening I asked a practitioner for help. Absent treatment was soon taken up in the most loving manner, with the result that after two weeks I was completely healed of all my troubles.
