The Lectures
Bicknell Young delivered two lectures on Christian Science in Second Church edifice. At the first one, the introductory remarks of Hugh H. Tweedy, first reader, were in part as follows:—
When Jesus, the Wayshower, who marked out the way for all to follow, was among men, he constantly and persistently explained that it was the doing of the works he did which made us his followers. In her book "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," the text-book of Christian Science, Mrs. Eddy says on page 147: "Late in the nineteenth century I demonstrated the divine rules of Christian Science. They were submitted to the broadest practical test, and everywhere, when honestly applied under circumstances where demonstration was humanly possible, this Science showed that Truth had lost none of its divine and healing efficacy, even though centuries had passed away since Jesus practised these rules on the hills of Judæa and in the valleys of Galilee." All through this wonderful book she constantly admonishes us to put into practice these "divine rules" of healing; that is, to prove our faith by our works, for nothing short of this will measure up to the standard of Christian Science.
