Deep gratitude impels me to tell of my experience at the birth of my little daughter, God's protecting power being active in her behalf, since the law of premature birth which was held over her was entirely broken. I had absent treatment at the time of the birth, but was attended by a nurse who knew nothing of Christian Science. According to her own words she never witnessed, during her ten years' experience, a birth which to appearances was so unfavorable at first and then went on so harmoniously, contrary to all human expectation. The nurse came at half past eight in the morning, and two hours later baby was born. She told me later that upon seeing me first she felt sure the birth could not take place without the use of artificial means. Although I cannot say that my thought had sufficiently risen above material conditions to exempt me from pain, yet I am most grateful for the experience that I had of the efficacy of spiritual law in setting aside every material law so called, and for the proof that the operation of this spiritual law is quick and safe. After three days I got up, and since then I have been active and efficient as never before.
Four weeks later we again had the privilege of experiencing God's love and omnipotence. Our little one was taken ill with a severe attack of bowel trouble. Every one knows how dangerous such attacks are held to be in the case of infants. The same nurse who had assisted me at the birth happened to come to see me on that day. She was visibly alarmed at the sight of the child and urged me to call a physician. I declined medical aid of any kind, and instead immediately telegraphed to a Christian Science practitioner for treatment. At nine o'clock in the evening I received the answer by telegram, saying that treatment had been taken up. I had endeavored to work along Christian Science lines, but had been unable to master my sense of fear, which, though unconscious at first, increased during the afternoon to the point of anxiety, as I saw the child apparently getting worse every hour. When at last I held the practitioner's telegram in my hands, a wonderful sense of peace and trust came over me, and the child's healing dated from that moment. When the nurse returned the next morning, she was very much surprised to find the child entirely well, as she had not expected to see it alive. The little one has been well ever since, has developed wonderfully, and is the sunshine and joy of our home.
I cannot express in words my gratitude for these experiences, for they have made me see more clearly the activity of the law of Love, and they have also taught me how much I myself can and must do through faithful watching and working to keep the child in good health and have it develop harmoniously. More and more I realize how great a privilege it is to be able to raise the child in the thought of Christian Science, and to know with absolute certainty that no material law has power over it; that it is subject only to the spiritual law which is of God, and is every hour under the protection of infinite Love. I cannot prove my gratitude better than by helping my child to become some day a good and faithful witness of the truth.
