The Lectures

Clarence W. Chadwick delivered two lectures on Christian Science in the edifice of First Church. At the first lecture he was introduced as follows by Prof. F. M. Hedges:—

Nineteen hundred years ago there came into this world the Christ-spirit as a manifestation of God's enduring love. It brought gladness to the sorrowing, relief to the afflicted, health to the sick, repentance to the sinner, and resurrection to those who were dead in the spirit. Today there is cast over the world the seeming gloom of unhappiness, pain, and sin. There is no hear that has not been shadowed with anguish, no one that has not felt the sting of pain, no one that has not been bowed in grief. If there is any teaching which will help to make that Christ-spirit a potent force in mitigating the overshadowing gloom of today, ought it not to find a ready response in every human heart? While not a member of the Christian Science church, I am in close enough accord with its teaching to know that it does offer such hope to those who are in sorrow, pain, or sin. In the teaching of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, the church affirms that divine Love is as efficacious today as yesterday in meeting every human need. The beginning of the way which leads to this glorious realization is through a proper understanding of the Science of being. May this lecture bring to you some knowledge of a teaching that is doing much to relieve human sorrow, sickness, and sin.

The introduction by John M. Dean at the second lecture was as follows:—
