I send this token of my gratitude in remembrance of the great blessings of help, strength, and guidance, which have been so bountifully bestowed upon me through the healing and saving power of Christian Science. I knew nothing of this teaching when it was recommended to me as a means of relief from a severe attack of sciatic rheumatism. I had tried everything that seemed to offer a hope of betterment, but to no purpose.
When I went to see a Christian Science practitioner, I had been unable to sit in a chair for some weeks. At the first treatment I was told that God is Love, that He has all power, and that I could be healed through a knowledge of Him who heals all our diseases. When I went home I threw away all my material remedies, and God has been our help ever since. My healing was not rapid, but it came slowly, as the light was revealed to me. After a few weeks I was told by the practitioner that I could do something for myself through the study of the Bible and a careful reading of our text-book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy. I continued to read and study, for I was convinced that my freedom from disease was to be obtained in proportion to my understanding of the truth.
I have been a member and an officer of the fire department for a number of years, and before the healing power of Truth was fully realized we had a call one night for a fire. It was extremely cold, and a severe storm of wind and snow made the conditions seem very serious. As I ran along I tried to realize God's protecting care. We had to stand on the roof of an adjoining building, directly facing the heat, the smoke, and the storm. A number of the firemen were overcome by the conditions and had to be carried home. There was much for me to attend to, but whether on the roof or on the ground, whenever there was a spare moment I realized that indeed God was taking care of us, and that we needed to trust Him fully. It was not until morning that our work was finished. I went home covered with ice, yet I realized a sweet sense of help and joy and strength, with no sense of fatigue. I felt as refreshed as though I had not been through such a night's work, and I continued to work the following day and a portion of the night.
