Aspiration

Nearer "the great heart of Love"Science and Health, p. 448. I longed to be.
The road seemed rough, no pathway could I see;
Dark were the nights, no daylight chased the gloom,
To my sad sense of things, a living tomb.

The golden sunshine others saw and praised;
Its splendor dazzled, but it never raised
My drooping hopes, for shadows deep were cast,
Which seemed to say: Joy comes when life is past.

What comfort was there here? For peace I sighed.
Nearer "the great heart of Love" my footsteps guide.
Was still my prayer, when lo! the answer came:
Here, now and always, Love is still the same.

As nearer "the great heart of Love" your steps you trace
Through sorrow's night, heaven's joy will then efface
From mem'ry's tablets all that giveth pain:
Press on undaunted, for the end is gain.

There is no waiting; Life and Love are one.
What lacks completion, since God's work is done?
The dream of sense alone is blinding thee;
Love's crown is thine. Awake! and thou art free.
