Christian Science came to me at a time when all was dark
Christian Science came to me at a time when all was dark. I did not know which way to turn. At eight years of age I became afflicted with what the doctors pronounced an incurable disease of the kidneys, and for years I underwent a process of doctoring and dieting which amounted almost to starvation, but without benefit. My parents were told I would never be healed and would never grow to womanhood. I became weak and miserable, and in the course of a few years throat and lung trouble developed, besides stomach disorders and neuralgia in its worst form. I would be confined to my bed for days, suffering untold agony. The least exposure to cold would bring on these attacks, and I could not be on my feet for any length of time without suffering. In spite of the doctor's predictions I grew to womanhood, but I was never quite free from suffering.
Three years ago, when a great affliction came to my home, a relative told us about Christian Science and sent us some of the literature. We read it all, and then I purchased a copy of Science and Health and began its study in connection with the Bible. I never doubted its truth for one moment, and as its teaching was opened up to me my ailments began to disappear. The nervous trouble was not so easily reached, but after having absent treatment for a time, this too yielded to the truth. Fear and discouragement have passed away, and truly the peace that passeth understanding is mine.
I became a member of a Christian church at an early age and read the Bible a great deal. Whenever I read of the wonderful works done by Christ Jesus, I had a great desire to be able to do these works also. I would think of it for days, and would talk with others about it, but none seemed to see as I did or think it possible that these works could be done today. I thank God that Christian Science has shown me that they can be done today; that just as I let that Mind be in me "which was also in Christ Jesus," I too may do at least some of these works. I have recently passed through what to mortal sense was a great sorrow, but the protecting power of divine Love has been with me through it all. There is a realization of security and harmony that cannot be taken away.
