It is with deep gratitude that I write this testimony of my healing in Christian Science, for through the understanding of the text-book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, I have been lifted into such happy consciousness that it is impossible to do justice in describing such a blessing. When only a child, I was taken from my mother and instructed in the teachings of another church. I made a feeble attempt to accept that religion until I became a young man; but the good people who endeavored to guide me, were no doubt of the opinion that I was a hopeless case, for insted of becoming a Christian, I was fast becoming the worst kind of sinner.
I had never read two chapters of the Bible in my life (more than twoscore years) until eighteen months ago. Then it seemed as if I had reached that point in life where I had seen almost everything in the way of evil and was without any knowledge of God, except the belief that I had to pass from this earth to see Him. Being in ill health, and having visited a number of physicians who could do nothing for me, a friend directed me to a specialist in Chicago, thinking this physician would cure me of what I believed was the worst form of mental illness, an extremely nervous condition. I called on this specialist and was informed that I must give up my business of twenty years' standing, go to a foreign port, and stay there until I obtained relief. He said he could not give me any medicine, that nothing would cure me but a long trip abroad, together with absolute quiet. I hastened to comply with his request, and withing two weeks was on the steamer for a European port.
Prior to leaving, however, I met a friend who handed me a copy of Science and Health, stating that I would be healed if I read it in the right spirit. Before I ended the trip to the old country this book had become my daily companion, as it has been ever since. What more could I ask, for it shows me beyond all question that God is All; and not only has it freed me from the belief that illness can attack me, but it has also led me to perceive greater possibilities in business and life. A Christian Science practitioner has aided me in realizing this great truth, and has guided me in the understanding that of myself I can do noting, but that with God all things are possible. In traveling from the shores of the Pacific ocean to the Red sea, I have seen and participated in well-nigh every known pleasure of the material senses, and I can say without reservation, I would rather have a few moments with God, as I now understand Him, than all that can be offered in a material way.
