[Written for the Sentinel]

Inspiration

At eventide I'm thinking of that night long years ago
When wondering shepherds watched their flocks and saw a
vision glow;
And e'en to me their vision comes—a glorious angel throng;
My heart o'erflows with gladness, I hear the rapturous song;
And as I listen, rapt before the Truth, the Life, the Love,
the light,
There surely now is born to me a Saviour dear tonight!

But with the morn the vision fades, the world unchanged
appears;
Without, within, I seem to be o'erwhelmed by doubts and
fears.
But no, there is a hope so bright no tongue can e'er express—
The vision shining in the night, the Love that stooped to
bless.
So on I follow, day by day, the path of joy and health;
The star of Bethlehem guiding me, I gain enduring wealth.
From discord into harmony all changed my life must be;
That vision of the coming Christ from bondage set me free!
