Harmony

Throughout all time men have been searching for heaven on earth, and searching in vain. Mortals have dimly perceived that it is necessary to find the truth before heaven can be discovered, hence the question of all the ages has been, "What is truth?" Truth is now no longer a question, for Christian Science reveals it, "confirming the word with signs following." In Science and Health we are told that "spiritual understanding, by which human conception, material sense, is separated from Truth, is the firmament" (p. 505). Spiritual understanding shows us that the spiritual firmament is the sense of the forever presence of divine Love, God, and this sense is heaven, harmony. We cannot bear the light of spiritual understanding until, through purging and purification, mortal thought has given place in our consciousness to the truth.

Mortal mind can never reach heaven, for the carnal mind is the belief in evil. It is "the beast that was, and is not, and yet is," and before the presence of Christ, Truth, nothing which "worketh abomination, or maketh a lie," can stand, for evil has no basis in Truth. It is the uplifting of the Christ-idea which causes the disappearance of the sense of sin, suffering, and disease.

In one of Emerson's poems there is a tale of two Jews who sought "the gate of heaven." When one of them applied for admission, he was told that none may enter there alone, but every one must bring another with him. This poem points the moral that selfishness can never enter the sanctuary, "the secret place of the most High." So we, too, when searching for harmony, are asked, "Where is thy brother?" for "Love is reflected in love" (Science and Health, p. 17). We must therefore live unselfishly, and establish harmony within our own consciousness, before we can lead the thought of other to "where the young child" is.
