"Treasure in heaven"

Among the thousands of testimonies to the efficacy of Christian Science which are given at the Wednesday evening meetings and through the columns of the Sentinel and Journal, not a few are from business men who through the study of this Science have been able to accomplish more, and on better lines, than ever before. To persons who are familiar with Christian Science and what it accomplishes for those whose endeavor it is to understand and apply its Principle and rule, it does not seem at all strange that this should be so.

As an initial proposition it can safely be said that a man who is in such a state of health as to be unable to give his affairs the attention they need, is not in a position to conduct a successful business on his own account, nor to be of great value as an employee. If to this disability is added, as is so frequently the case, the vices which have taken root in conviviality or despondency, failure is quite likely to be the outcome. The banishment of these disabilities is not, however, what business men who make Christian Science their daily guide are most grateful for, as may be seen by a perusal of these testimonies. It has been claimed that observance of the golden rule is incompatible with success in business ; but this is not true, unless there is something more precious and more to be desired than the kingdom of God. These men are finding out that it is possible to do business in conformity with this rule, and their heart's deepest gratitude is for the knowledge of God which will not permit them to take advantage of those with whom they trade, and that makes them more intelligent, more diligent, more kind, and more unselfish in their dealings with their fellow men.

If business is done upon any other basis than that prescribed by the Master, "Whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them," then it is done on the false basis of power in evil, on the basis of a supposed intelligence superior to that which God bestows, and that can bring only an ephemeral success. Can any business man of righteous desire and Christian intent do otherwise than trust God in all his affairs, and give thanks to Him for all things of real value? What business man is there who does not wish to be guided by intelligence? If God is supreme intelligence, then His is the guidance which all desire, whether they know it or not.
