Early in 1907 the outlook for the future seemed very dark...
Early in 1907 the outlook for the future seemed very dark for us, and the "silver lining" hard to find through the heavy clouds. We were arranging to leave our home town, the place where I was born and had always lived; but "man's extremity is God's opportunity." A friend told me that Christian Science would keep me from being homesick when among strangers. Although I did not understand, I believed, and began the reading of Science and Health and other Christian Science literature, together with the faithful study of the Lesson-Sermons, seeking for something that would relieve the longing for my old home and friends when away from them.
Divine Love met our need. We did not move to the East, and now that we are Christian Scientists, we know more joy, content, and peace than ever before. To mortal seeming we have been obliged to give up many things which we considered necessary to our happiness; but with the going of material things there has been a reaching out for something better, something which this world cannot give and which can never be taken from us. A glance backward over the past few years brings such an overwhelming rush of good things for which I wish to express my gratitude, that there seems to be a sense of confusion as to which to tell about. This has been the case repeatedly, when I desired to write my testimony for the Sentinel. Thus the weeks, months, and years have passed, but with the passing every hour has brought added blessings.
We have had many splendid healings of physical ills, and have proven to our entire satisfaction that Christian Science does heal. I am grateful for the overcoming of fear, and for the thought of protection that this understanding of God gives, the knowledge that God is ever present, ever loving, and ever ready to help when we are in trouble of any kind, if we but turn to Him. From the beginning of my study of that wonderful book "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," I have never doubted one word.
