Among the Churches

Current Notes

Portland, Ore.—The beautiful new edifice of Second Church of Christ, Scientist, at East Sixth and Holladay streets, will be opened tomorrow [Nov. 1]. With the completion of Second Church, all the Christian Science churches in Portland are now provided with buildings of their own, except Fifth Church, which was organized only last spring. The new building, which faces south, nearly fills the 100 by 100 foot lot. The auditorium has been so planned that from every one of the thousand seats a full view can be had of the readers' platform. The site was purchased a year ago, and construction work on the beautiful building, whose cost is forty thousand dollars, started in February of this year.

Services which led to the organization of Second Church of Christ, Scientist, in 1897, were first held in 1893, when a small group of those interested in Christian Science met at the residence of one of their number on the west side. About a year later a hall in the Turney Building on Second and Taylor streets was engaged, and services were held there until the increased attendance made larger quarters necessary. The hall in the Auditorium Building on Third street was then secured. It was while here that a charter was secured and the church organized. Later, services were held in the present Elks' Temple on Stark street until 1906, when the Woodmen's Hall at East Sixth and Alder streets was rented, where services have been held up to the present time.
