It has been some time since my first personal experience...

It has been some time since my first personal experience with Christian Science in 1909, and for the many blessings that have come to me in this time, I wish to give thanks. The bitter and futile efforts to obtain happiness from materially conceived gods, forced me to accept Christian Science when no power seemed possible to save me. Having lost everything that seemed real to me,—happiness, respect, health, and means of support,—I turned to God with that desire which Mrs. Eddy says "is prayer" (Science and Health, p. 1), and the result was that the liquor and drug-taking habits were at once destroyed. Conditions which made it apparently impossible for me to escape either a prison or an asylum, vanished with the night. Here I wish to say that owing to my mother's beautiful healing, I had known of the power of Christian Science for several years before accepting it, and occasionally read the text-book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures."

Comparatively recently, in January, 1913, the smoking habit was eliminated, although not without a struggle. For a long time I complacently waited for this habit to disappear. When I started to read the text-book, at first I had to pass over certain passages speaking of the tobacco habit; then these were read very hurriedly; later more carefully, as the fumes of tobacco on my clothes began to annoy me. Finally, a practitioner to whom I had gone on business said to me one day, "My dear friend, smoke cannot hide God from you." I came home and kept to that true thought all day, and by evening, confident of the healing, I threw out the tobacco and cigarette papers, and sent an acknowledgment of gratitude to the practitioner.

Here I would say that all such desires are permanently replaced by higher ones. My physical condition has so changed in this time that people who have known me since I first turned to Christian Science for help, have marveled. An emaciated body has changed to a normal condition; an eye trouble has been eliminated, and a severe catarrhal condition has vanished. These improved mental and physical conditions give great reason for rejoicing, but my greater gratitude is for the understanding of God which enables me to help in the redemptive work of mankind. I have had the privilege of class instruction this year, and I have never failed to see harmonious results when the Principle of Christian Science, as our Leader, Mrs. Eddy, has made it known to us, has been obeyed.
