Fear Overcome

An experience of recent date has taught me many forcible lessons, which I gladly share with others. One morning, while engaged in household duties, I heard my name called by a member of my family who was evidently in great distress, and as I crossed the floor to go to him, a great sense of fear possessed me; but like a flash of light there came to my consciousness the thought that though mortal sense could do nothing, God was there, and that with Him all things were possible. At once all fear vanished, and I felt that my prayer was answered. When I approached the one who had called, he said, "I do not need you; I am all right." It seems that a horse, in leaving the stable, had kicked him in the side and hand. The blow was so severe that his watch was dented and broken beyond repair.

It is not necessary to enlarge upon details, but by holding steadfastly to the truth gained with my first realization of God's presence, the one who had been injured used his hand and leg with perfect freedom the next day in doing some very heavy work, and the flesh was normal and without discoloration. It is not, however, the physical healing that I wish to lay stress upon, but the overcoming of fear, and the mental step taken which produced such results. I have read many articles in the various Christian Science publications telling of like overcomings, and I sometimes wondered how others accomplished these healings; but in my own need I was answered by ever-present Mind.

By the systematic study of the Bible and Science and Health, as explained in the Manual, just as one would study a subject each day in school, putting into practice the knowledge gained in all the little things which come into daily life, such as refraining from gossip, from criticism of others, from worry, irritation, unkind words and actions, etc., I am learning that in doing the work of the Master daily, one's thoughts turn naturally and instinctively, in a time of crisis, to Truth, and he is rewarded with a realization of that love spoken of in St. John, which "casteth out all fear," and which restores harmony.
