For many years I was a student of the Bible and an active worker in the church, but I was always in poor health and believed that God sent sickness to His children to prove to them. His love, for the Bible says, "Whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth." I worked on and my health got no better, but I felt God wanted me to do greater work for Him than the work at home, so I prepared to be foreign missionary. When I had the college study and part of the medical study completed, I was in a very bad condition financially, and could read very little on account of weak eyes. I was taking seven kinds of medicine for stomach, bowel, and heart trouble, the latter said to be organic, and with continual pain in my head and side I thought I had no friend anywhere. I studied medicine to learn of a way to cure my many ailments, and I worked in religion to save myself from eternal torture.
My need was great in these many respects, and I wondered if there was a way of delivery for me. Yes, when I was fully ready, Christian Science found me. My physical healing was slow, but the change could be noticed from week to week. I was very anxious to follow the instructions of my practitioner, so I stopped taking medicine at once. Then I studied the text-book carefully, and soon saw that Science and Health would teach me the way to know God, the author of all harmony.
In a year and a half my financial condition was what I had long wished it to be; I could also eat all kinds of food; while I found help and inspiration in the Bible and the Christian Science literature, and all whom I met seemed to be friends. The fear of eternal torment has left me, and I feel thankful to God for Mrs. Eddy's discovery of this truth. The daily work in Christian Science proves God to be what He really is. In Science and Health we read that "God is natural good, and is represented only by the idea of goodness; while evil should be regarded as unnatural, because it is opposed to the nature of Spirit, God" (p. 119). What more did I need, and what but the truth as here stated has healed me?
