Topeka (Kan.) State Journal
Your editorial says: "What the late Mrs. Eddy called 'Christian Science' has been renamed by some medical specialists as the 'New Hypnotism,' the scientific use of mind influence for curative purposes." It is true that through a misapprehension of the distinction which Christian Science makes between the so-called human mind and the divine Mind, a certain class of medical specialists would have the uninstructed public believe that Christian Science and hypnotism are one and the same thing. Christian Science and hypnotism bear no relationship whatever to each other. Hypnotism is the operation of the belief of sentient life and intelligence in matter, or one human mind influencing another; it is mental suggestion, or thought transference, and if used by one class of thinkers for good, another class may use it for evil purposes. To believe that thought can be transmitted from one person to another, subjects the believer to the evil conditions of such operation as well as its seeming good.
Christian Science has come to the rescue, and it emancipates mankind from this superstition and the wrongs perpetuated through the belief of its power. Christian Science teaches that God, good, is infinite and omnipotent; that God is Mind, hence the only Mind; that this Mind was manifested through Christ Jesus, giving him dominion over all physical, mental, and moral conditions of material existence. The master Physician gave mankind the rule of salvation when he said, "This is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent." It is to be understood that all human discord, of whatever nature, is the result of mortal ignorance of God and the Christ. The teachings of Christian Science give to mortals the spiritual understanding of scientific being; it is this knowing, or knowledge of God, that destroys human ignorance of His law, and the perfect man made in His image and likeness appears.
Christian Science maintains that God is present and all power, that He is the source of all activity, all life; and that knowledge of this spiritual fact destroys evil's claim to presence, power, activity, and life; hence it is the activity of right thought about God and man which destroys the wrong thought or misconception. Health is a quality of divine Mind; it is the activity of the law of God, which is continuously operative and is everywhere. This knowledge of spiritual truth applied to human consciousness, not only destroys the belief of sickness and disease, but meets humanity's needs, spiritually, mentally, morally, physically, and financially. Mrs. Eddy says in her text-book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," page 116: "A correct view of Christian Science and of its adaptation to healing includes vastly more than is at first seen. Works on metaphysics leave the grand point untouched. They never crown the power of Mind as the Messiah, nor do they carry the day against physical enemies,—even to the extinction of all belief in matter, evil, disease, and death,—nor insist upon the fact that God is all, therefore that matter is nothing beyond an image in mortal mind."
