Had your correspondent, Mr. Johnson, continued the syllogism...

Scarboro (England) Weekly Post

Had your correspondent, Mr. Johnson, continued the syllogism he propounds, he would have answered himself as to the origin of mortal mind, in that God being infinite Mind, or omnipresence, there is no place for any other mind. The greatest metaphysician the world has ever known, Jesus the Christ, has most accurately described this mind when he declared it to be a lie, and that it about not in the truth. A lie can have no origin in Truth, and therefore it cannot be said to have an origin. Paul is equally explicit when he declares this mind to be "enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be," and yet God governs all things. There is all the difference in the world between seeming and being, between the merely relative and the absolute. To itself this carnal or mortal mind seems real enough, but both it and its phenomena must give way before the facts of being. Evil is just as real as we make it, neither more nor less. This has been conclusively proved by those who are striving to have that Mind "which was also in Christian Jesus," the one Mind which is God, all the power there is, all the presence, and all the science or knowledge there is.

Our critic has managed utterly to misrepresent Christian Science treatment; he has quite ingeniously reversed the process, if he will excuse my saying so. Christian Science is not suggestion, which does not in any way whatever come into operation. Christian Science strives to turn one's thought to God, who is all the power there is, who is good and good only, not good and evil; a God who, as John declares, is Love. The patient then begins to realize that he is under this power, that is is good only, and that therefore there can be no influence over him but good. As the fear of evil, as a power over him, is destroyed through a recognition of the facts of being, he sees he has been deceived by what is merely a suppositional power; he ceases to fear it, and his recovery commences. Nothing whatever is suggested to the patient; he is told "the truth," and the truth it is that makes him his "Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free," said the greatest practitioner of scientific healing.

Christian Science is not "lopsided," "because it ignores all physical methods." To employ physical methods would weaken the plea with Truth; a divided trust is no trust. We do not propose, in our work for the sick and the sinner, to use any other method than that used by Christ Jesus, who employed no physical methods. He was completely successful, and the more closely we follow him, "the way" and the Wayshower, the more successful we shall be. Let our critic try for himself. I promise him he will not be disappointed with the result.
