Considerably more than seven years ago I was healed by...
Considerably more than seven years ago I was healed by Christian Science of the liquor habit, which had assumed such proportions as to cause me to lose my home, my family, my position, my friends,—everything, even my self-esteem, and not until then was I ready for Christian Science. My condition may be aptly illustrated by that of a boat upon the sea without a rudder or a pair of oars with which to propel it. It is easy to see how utterly helpless one in such a boat would be in a storm; and such was my condition as I was coming to Christian Science, notwithstanding I had good physical health and was apparently in possession of all my faculties. I was, however, not only healed of the liquor habit, but my home, my family, my position, and my friends were all restored to me.
My purpose in giving this testimony is to show how Christian Science handles a case like mine, and I will cite the Bible and the Christian Science text-book as authority for any statements which I may make. When the reformers of Jesus' time brought to him a sinful woman, and wanted him to order her stoned, in accordance with the Mosaic law, he said to those men, "He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her." The story continues that they all stole away one by one, leaving this woman alone with Jesus, who then asked her, "Where are those thine accusers? hath no man condemned thee?" to which she replied: "No man, Lord," and Jesus then said unto her, "Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more."
This attitude of Jesus with the adulterous woman is exactly the attitude which a Christian Science practitioner takes with a drunkard, the same compassionate love is shown him which was shown this woman. In other words, "The same 'Mind ... was also in Christ Jesus,' must always accompany the letter of Science in order to confirm and repeat the ancient demonstrations of prophets and apostles" (Science and Health, p. 243). What this woman most needed was to have her vision cleared so that she could understand God's spiritual creation, and man as the likeness of God. When a discordant condition is destroyed in the consciousness of any individual, it is destroyed in the consciousness of all concerned. Is it any wonder that one is happy in trying to be a Christian Scientist?
