The whole question lies in this: Is Jesus' method of healing...
Scarboro (England) Weekly Post
The whole question lies in this: Is Jesus' method of healing through Spirit, Mind, God, the method which he practised and repeatedly commanded his followers to adopt, and in which he himself never failed, a more efficacious treatment than materia medica, or not? This is the only method employed by Christian Scientists, and they are successful according to their understanding of its Principle and rule, as in every other science. The reason it has not been practised systematically since some three hundred years after Christ, is because the law which governs spiritual healing was not understood. It is now clearly explained in the book "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, and all may avail themselves of its healing ministry who care to do so.
Christian Science is not hypnotism, suggestion, or any of its numerous branches. These systems are at the opposite pole to Christian Science. Hypnotism, et hoc genus, is the ascendency of one human mind over another, and is fraught with the gravest danger to the community. It must be quite obvious to all that if it is capable of a suppositional good, it is also capable of unqualified evil, as certain recent trials in the law courts of Europe have conclusively proved. The results of letting such a system loose on a defenseless public can only be contemplated with horror.
Christian Science, on the other hand, tampers with no one's mentality, but turns thought away from its fears and false beliefs in evil as a power strong enough to cope with and overcome good, to the contemplation of God, good, as the only power, the only presence, the only Science or knowledge. It is belief in evil as a power that produces evil, and the understanding of good as the only power, that destroys evil, whether called sin, sickness, or disease. This system is safe; it cannot make a patient worse, as is frequently the case with poisonous drugs or the unsuccessful use of the knife, but must uplift him morally, mentally, and physically, as it did in the days when preached and practised by the Galilena Prophet.
