THE LECTURES
Bliss Knapp delivered a lecture for First Church in the Queen's hall on Christian Science. He was introduced as follows by Col. the Hon. G. Napier:—
It gives me great pleasure to introduce the lecturer this evening. I am glad to be on this platform, though not because I am fond of public speaking—I have always had an extreme aversion to the public eye, so much so that I once had a paper read for me at the Royal Geographical Society. No inducement would have been strong enough to bring me on that platform, but I owe so much to Christian Science that I am not only ready but glad and grateful to be here and to acknowledge a debt which cannot be repaid.
Let me give you a personal reminiscence. In the year 1868 I was presented with a Bible. The date is on the flyleaf. For twenty-five years after that I had an active and varied career in the government service. The book was never lost, but I never opened it until quite recently, when I began to study Christian Science. Now the Bible is my constant friend and companion. Let me assure you that if you will study the Bible with the aid of the Christian Science text-book, which is a commentary on the Bible, you will find a pathway to health, happiness, and prosperity in this life. Christian Science is a workaday-world religion. In the ordinary affairs of life, in business, in trade or politics, in sickness and sorrow, in every difficulty that confronts the human mind, if honestly and faithfully relied on, it will be found a practical guide and sure remedy. The human mind is in a sense better than itself, and has ideals higher than its own. The spread of Christian Science is without doubt the fullest expression of this higher craving for good. The call that has brought so many hundreds here this dull November evening is the same call that has echoed through the ages, as the Old Testament record shows. It is the call, the message, that drew the multitudes to seek the Christ on the shore of the lake of Galilee two thousand years ago, the call that will cease only when all men know God.
