AMONG THE CHURCHES

CURRENT NOTES.

Austin, Texas.—First Church of Christ, Scientist, of Austin, had its beginning in the meeting together of a few people who had been mentally and physically helped by the teaching of Christian Science. They first met in a private home in 1889, but as the interest grew larger, various places were from time to time rented, until a few years ago a hall was secured in the business section of the city. Not long since, the church purchased one of the most desirable building sites in the city, located at Colorado and West Fourteenth streets, almost within a stone's throw of the state capitol. The interior of the stone building on this property has been entirely remodeled and handsomely furnished, with the reading-room adjoining the church proper. This building will be used until the increased demand for more space shall necessitate the erection of a larger edifice, when it is designed to erect a beautiful structure in keeping with the location and the requirements of the church.

Extensive improvements are now being made about the grounds, including a cement walk and curbing to extend around the entire street frontage. When this is finished, the grounds will be terraced and prepared for landscape gardening in the spring. It is also designed to complete the interior furnishing before long by installing a small pipe organ in a wing to be erected on the east side of the building.
