[Written for the Sentinel.]

THE NEW YEAR

The year is new to those who dwell in time,
Who reckon age by days and months and years,
Who look through windows dimmed by winter's rime
For twelve months more of hopes and doubts and fears!

But those who dwell forever in the light
(Reflections of the God whose voice they hear),
Dispel the mists of error:—their clear sight
Discerns the eternal good and knows no fear.

Not bound in chains of matter—false belief!
Their soaring thoughts wing unimpeded flight.
They know not time, nor age, nor pain, nor grief,
But live for Love, in God's eternal light.
