After serious invalidism for twenty years, the result of...
After serious invalidism for twenty years, the result of an accident, I came to the point where all available medical skill seemed to fail and the doctor's verdict was that I could not live through another winter. Still, as an active worker in a Christian church I believed I could be healed through faith in God if I only knew how to grasp and apply that saving faith. We then heard of Christian Science, and my husband took me to Omaha to a practitioner for treatment. In less than three weeks I was healed, and I knew it was the Christ-power, the same power which Jesus used, that had healed me.
We went home and I did my housework, as our family was small, my husband helping with the heaviest of the work. Especially was he careful to keep the wood-box and water-pail filled before he left home for each day's work. We lived in the upper part of a house, another family being in the basement, and all the water we used had to be pumped by hand from a very deep well near the house and brought up the hill to our rooms. One day when I was alone in the house, I went to get dinner, and found that the water-pail was empty. What to do I did not know, and while thinking about it I saw the man who lived down-stairs come home. I started to ask him to bring some water for me, but before I got to the door it seemed as if a voice said, "Are you going to deny that Christ has healed you?" I audibly said "No," for I knew that I was healed. I waited until I was alone in the house again, then went down to the well, pumped the water, and brought the full pail up the hill as easily as my husband could have done, though I was always called a slender woman and had never done that sort of work before.
This was a very happy experience for me; I rejoiced over my healing as I had not done before, for I had proved that I knew I was healed, and that God was my strength. Though this was more than twenty-five years ago, I have never ceased to rejoice for this one proof. Many seeming trials have come during these years, but my faith in the Christpower to heal has remained undisturbed. This experience, coming as it did so soon after my healing, taught me the truth of what Mrs. Eddy says in Science and Health, "Whatever it is your duty to do, you can do without harm to yourself" (p. 385). Sometimes I have to stop to think what duty is, and God always guides when I listen to His voice.
