"RELIANCE ON TRUTH."
Just as in the commercial world, with the ushering in of a new year, men take an account of stock and check up their gains and losses, so we as Christian Scientists, laborers in the vineyard of God, may profitably review the work of the year just closed, count our blessings, and with renewed courage enter upon another "Soul-filled year" (Science and Health, p. 599), another year of work for God, of reliance on Truth to overcome every phase of error.
There is indeed reason for rejoicing in the reports that come to us from lecturers and others who have been brought into touch with the hundreds of Christian Science organizations whose services girdle this great globe with a chain of healing, saving truth, the knowledge of God which the Master declared to be eternal life to him that acquireth it. These reports not only indicate great numerical growth of the movement, but they show that wherever the good seed has been sown the sick are being healed, the sinful reformed, and the sorrowing comforted; and this notwithstanding the many obstacles, the would-be hindrances placed in the way of those who have accepted Jesus' words as true, and his works as the demonstration of his teachings. The Master's injunction to his disciples when he sent them forth "to preach the kingdom of God, and to heal the sick," is being obeyed in all parts of the world today, and the results are as certain as int the days when the twelve fared forth upon their world-wide mission,—the promised "signs" follow "them that believe."
Mrs. Eddy writes on page 167 of Science and Health, quoting Paul's declaration that "the flesh lusteth against the Spirit": "The flesh and Spirit can no more unite in action, than good can coincide with evil. ... Only through radical reliance on Truth can scientific healing power be realized." With clear-sighted vision our Leader outlines the course from which there can be no swerving, no deviation, if we are to be faithful to our trust. Spirit and flesh must ever be at war; there can be no compromise between Truth and error, and it is because Christian Scientists as a whole have awakened to this truism, that the opening of each new year witnesses an ever increasing throng responsive to the call, "Come out from among them, and be ye separate."
